Custom Orthotics

Like the foundation of a house, your feet support the weight of everything above them. When a small problem develops in your feet, the subtle change in the way you walk can cause a chain reaction of adjustments in your posture and walking mechanics, which can lead to long term painful conditions.
At Matheson Clinic we can help align and correct these imbalances, providing custom support, and custom comfort. Orthotics assist in shock absorption, and prevent conditions that might lead to severe foot problems, excessive calf strains and cramps, ankle, knee and back pain due to shock absorption. Orthotics can assist to prevent these problems from developing further.
The majority of professions should wear custom orthotics everyday at work, all year long. However many don’t realize their foot problems can be addressed through custom and properly fitted orthotics. , or may be turned away because of the cost.
But let’s do a simple math:
1 pair of custom made orthotic = $515.00. (Best quality orthotics).
A pair of orthotics will last for 2 years for those wearing everyday for work. (Orthotics can even last up to 10 years for those who don’t wear them often.)
Let’s say you wear the orthotics everyday, and get a new one every 2 years, so from 25-65 years old, that’s 40 years and a total of 20 pairs.
20 x $515.00 = $10,300 / lifetime.
THINK IT’S A LOT OF MONEY? Orthotics are also preventative in nature and are excellent at relieving those daily factors that attack your body leading to aches and pains — if not treated, may become severe and chronic.
THAT LEADS TO:
- $$$ spent on medication, doctor costs, examinations.
- $$$ lost from work due to lower working ability ($50,000 decrease to $25,000 annual salary) — Rough estimate based on an average worker’s income.
- $$$ UNLIMITED cost due to PAIN, inability to enjoy everyday life, family life, and social life.
- GOOD NEWS IS, your work insurance may cover most if not all the cost of your highest grade orthotic device. It is possible that you won’t have to spend a SINGLE PENNY extra for your custom orthotics.
- Most work insurance plans cover for custom orthotics every year, and we at Matheson Clinic can work together with you to MINIMIZE OUT OF POCKET COST TO YOU.

FAQ: How do Custom Prescription Orthotics work?
Our prescription orthotics look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom-made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Our Custom Orthotics have the advantage of having been made from precise digital imprints of your feet so that they can give you custom support and comfort.
What conditions can Custom Orthotics help?
Our Custom Orthotics are most often helpful with foot conditions, bunions, flat or pronated feet, fallen arches, ankle pain, knee pain and low back pain. As the body is an interconnected mechanical system, the benefits go up the kinetic chain and can even help with neck pain and headaches. Some conditions orthotics may help include:
- Flat or painful feet
- Painful or fallen arches
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Knee or Ankle Pain
- Bunions or Hammer Toes
- Low Back or Hip Pain
The Four Steps to Custom Orthotics
- Foot and gait exam. Your custom orthotics begins with a bio-mechanical exam of your foot and a gait analysis. We will evaluate and diagnose your foot biomechanics and determine the cause of the pain/symptoms you are experiencing.
- Casting your feet. After corrective manipulation, we will take a 3D foam cast of your foot in a perfected posture. This captures the foot in its optimal neutral position with joints aligned correctly. The casts and a prescription are then sent to a professional certified lab that manufactures orthotics.
- Making the orthotics. Highly skilled technicians at the laboratory use the mold of your foot and the physician’s prescription to make orthotics that are built specifically to support the misalignment of your feet and ankles.
- Ensuring fit and comfort. Once your orthotics are ready we will contact you to arrange an orthotics-fitting appointment with us. You will try on your new orthotics in the clinic, and we will ensure they fit correctly and are comfortable.
How are Our Custom Orthotics different from off-the-shelf insoles?
Most store-bought gel and comfort fabric insoles provide only soft padding under the feet, but do not address the biomechanical and support structure of the feet, and are usually very short-lived. The customization process is what makes our Custom Orthotics true custom medical appliances for maximum support and function. Custom Orthotics are custom-milled to the patient’s exact specifications, and modified to the patients needs (including specially placed padding and extra heel or arch support where medically necessary), and before they are given to the patient, they must pass rigorous quality control testing.
How can Custom Orthotics help me?
Custom Orthotics can help immensely by providing custom support for the body. They provide optimally balanced force distribution across the feet, customized to the patient’s already existing pattern of standing/walking. Custom Orthotics are able to redistribute the body weight efficiently and take pressure off of areas which may be overburdened, as well as help properly align the bones of the feet, ankles and knees.
Can Custom Orthotics help my lower back pain?
Yes, Custom Orthotics can help. If foot arches have dropped, or the biomechanics of the feet are altered, it can cause a change in how one walks and can put pressure on the ankles, knees and hips resulting in lower back pain.
What type of Custom Orthotics can I get, and for which shoes?
Custom Orthotics are available for all footwear applications. The most popular types are the multipurpose Custom Orthotic allows for versatile usage in casual, work, or sports shoes, and the runner’s custom orthotic which provides greater shock absorption, stability, and greater breathability materials. Other applications include those for court sports, dress shoes, narrow heels or boots, golf shoes, skis/snowboards, and skates. Special Custom Orthotics are also available for patients who require further protection from arthritis or diabetes related conditions.
Do insurance plans cover Custom Orthotics?
Yes. The majority of Canadian workers have partial or full coverage for custom orthotics through their workplace health care plans. OHIP does not cover these medical appliances. To help make insurance reimbursement easy, the patient is provided with a detailed itemized receipt, upon payment at the time of purchase, listing the health provider’s credentials and registration numbers, as well as the cost and date of the order. Additionally our clinic supplies a Custom Orthotics insurance letter which details all the specifications needed by the insurance company regarding the custom orthotics.
